St David’s Park
designed & laid out by
LJ LIPSCOMBE
Superintendent of Reserves
opened 1926

The lion sculptures in this entrance were restored as a bicentennial gift to the people of Hobart from the Australian and New Zealand Banking Group Limited which erected them here jointly with the corporation of the city of Hobart in 1988. The lions were carved in a tent on the foot path in 1884 by Richard Patterson to serve over the entrance to the Bank of Van Diemen’s Land. The building (pictured) stood at the corner of Collins and Elizabeth streets until 1958. The lions were then displayed at Port Arthur under the care of the Tasmanian Government until 1988.
This plaque is dedicated to the memory of those who arrived in this country with captain Arthur Phillip on the first fleet in 1788 and were buried nearby Fellowship of First Fleeters 1988
To the pioneers of Tasmania
who arrived before 1835 this
ground was dedicated in the
presence of their descendants
by his Excellency Governor of
Tasmania Sir Ernest Clark
